The textile industry is one of the largest contributors to global waste generation and environmental pollution. Traditional disposal methods, such as landfilling or incineration, contribute to resource depletion and greenhouse gas emissions. With clothing consumption projected to increase by 63% by 2030, the need to address these environmental impacts has never been more urgent. Efficient recycling practices for textile fibers offer a solution, with chemical recycling presenting a viable option. However, understanding the effects of wet chemical processes on recycled fibers and wastewater quality remains limited. Thus, the aim of this project is to investigate the effects of wet mechanical and chemical processes on both recycled textile fibers and wastewater quality, aiming to advance sustainable practices in textile recycling. This study seeks to understand the properties of recycled textile fibers post-mechanical/ chemical treatment, characterize the physical and chemical changes in bleached textiles, and evaluate the impact of wet mechanical and chemical processes on wastewater quality. By investigating structural, mechanical, physical, and chemical alterations in fibers subjected to these treatments, the research aims to inform strategies for optimizing the recycling process, enhancing fiber quality, and minimizing environmental impact.
